Comedy horror about nasty South American killer spiders on the loose in a small American town. It may star a hissing, screaming spider but Frank Marshall’s directorial debut is great fun nonetheless! Jeff Daniels and John Goodman are in terrific form with the latter adding most of the funnier moments. As you would expect from director Frank Marshall and producer Spielberg this film is a perfect blend between top notch production values and light-hearted entertainment. Like all Spielberg’s protégés, Marshall is well schooled in the art of ensconcing the audience in a warm sense of community before introducing the creepy intrusion. Thus, in Arachnophobia he takes his time in building up to the scares by bringing us to every corner of the town and introducing a host of well-rounded secondary characters. It works a great because, like Gremlins and Jaws before that, it effectively augments the sense of alien intrusion and ramps up the creepiness factor.
