Review:

One of the defining actresses of US film noir, Gloria Grahame could do deceptive, mean, and/or outright nasty with the best of them. And that depth of range was her real gift as she produced substantially different versions of the same character over and over again. Deftly capable of balancing vulnerability with shrewd confidence so that in one turn, the former is genuine and the latter not, and in another, vice versa, she rendered many a film with seductively ambiguous, a quality that most of them would largely succeed on. Though usually featuring as a name of note in an ensemble cast, she didn’t waste her opportunity when it came to sharing the outright lead. Nicholas Ray’s In a Lonely Place pitted her opposite Humphrey Bogart at the height of his powers and she matched him every inch of the way in setting that movie’s timeless heady atmosphere of romantic caution. Though she made a number of films across several genres, she has best been remembered for those cast-iron 24 carat-bitch performances with her turn as the vengeful Debbie Marsh in The Big Heat being the among the most satisfying that the genre has offered up.
