Once know as the safest pair of hands in Hollywood, his box office draw may have waned over the last decade but the former carpenter is still a good bet. The consummate on-screen “man’s man”, Ford rocketed to stardom as the interstellar buccaneer Han Solo. A man who clawed one back for every guy who’d ever been cold shouldered by a Princess and who shot first and a asked rhetorical questions later. This cheeky persona emerged again in his Indiana Jones character but with added insecurities allowing Ford’s natural charm to win out on a whole new array of levels. Though fairly limited in range, he’s shown a constant willingness to challenge himself throughout his career. His work with Peter Weir resulted in two critically acclaimed performances and a dark turn in a Regarding Henry revealed an interesting edge. His humorous roles have proved most enjoyable though with his turn in Mike Nichols’ Working Girl a clear cut demonstration of his comedic skills. In recent years, Ford has hit cruise control playing the same suited middle-upper class type in a variety of mainstream thrillers. They usually culminate in a clumsy fight, all suits and ties and Ford swinging a telephone or iron right before he points a weary finger at the man who has offended him. It’s all rather banal but to those who grew up in the 80’s, he’ll always be the guy who gave us Deckard, Solo, and Indie!
