Review:

Making his name with the tricksy psychological thriller Memento, Christopher Nolan quickly hit the big time when Warner Bros. put him in charge of the rebooted Batman franchise. Attempting to make the world of Gotham City more real and gritty seemed to be right down his street but a strong desire to emulate the slick storytelling of Michael Mann saw him repeatedly attempt to rise beyond his abilities. Only in The Dark Knight and the more recent Interstellar has he properly balanced story with the more thrilling elements of a story whereas in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight Rises, he lost sight of one or both. Posing as complicated and clever films but remaining, at essence, vehicles for repetitive action scenarios, Nolan’s movies seem to play to the male adolescent demographic in particular. That said, there are signs of an upward trajectory in his career and with a couple of steps back from the screenwriting side of things (a weakness that directly stifles his directing ability), he could mature into one of Hollywood’s more capable directors.
