“The Austrian Oak” hit the screen in the 1970’s in a number of minor roles most notable amongst which was as a henchmen in Robert Altman’s The Long Goodbye. However, it wasn’t until starring in the documentary Pumping Iron that he rose to fame and landing the title roles in Conan the Barbarian and Conan the Destroyer consolidated that fame. In 1984, he played the title role in James Cameron’s The Terminator and with his now iconic portrayal of the remorseless cyborg, he rocketed to super-stardom.

Though limited in range and with a heavy accent which he has never lost, Arnie’s popularity made him untouchable in the action genre and despite a number of strong contenders, he was its undisputed king during its heydays of the late 80’s and early 90’s. Proving himself to be a shrewd operator in the business, he continued to pick his roles well resulting in an extended run of box-office smashes and, unlike some action or comedy stars who try to make it in more dramatic parts, he never once took on a role that was beyond his reach. That said, every so often, he was capable of surprisingly accomplished performances, like when he nailed the suave comedy-action balance of Harry Tasker in True Lies.

Beyond the year of that movie’s release, however, Arnie began to show the first signs of a waning action career with a series of under-performing if not under-appreciated releases such as Eraser, End of Days, and The 6th Day. Eventually his strong political ambitions led to an extended sabbatical as the Governor of California. Returning to the screen in 2013, the then 66 year old action man continued his struggle to produce a sure fire hit and despite working with interesting directors like David Ayer, the jury is still out on whether “The Governator” will ever make it back to where he was. The most recent installment in the ever bloating Terminator franchise, Terminator: Genisys will most likely give us a definitive answer on that one but we’ll have to wait until the summer of 2015 to get it.
